Who are we?

We are a team of undergraduates, PhD candidates and Professors from the School of English and Drama of Queen Mary, University of London and beyond!

Ioana Radulescu
(Co-Founder & Editor-in-Chief for Issue 01.)

'I am a third-year undergraduate reading English literature at Queen Mary. My dream is to see Wonderer grow into an internationally acclaimed literary journal, an aspiration that I am lucky to share with a team of distinguished academics and aspiring writers. Academically, I am particularly interested in literary theory; temporality and narrative theory, specifically cognitive temporal perception and ‘the unforeseeable’; Modernist literature and continental philosophy. Wonderer is perhaps also a reflection of my affinity for figures that embody the spirit of curiosity and experimentation, Renaissance humanists or avant-garde movements.'

Chloe Lim
(
Co-Founder & Chairperson)

'I am a third year English student at Queen Mary University of London. My academic interests are theology, music and art history, whilst my love for languages has always motivated me to travel to different places and learn about new cultures. As founding chairwoman of Wonderer, I am very excited to embark upon this journey of academic enlightenment, experience valuable editing opportunities and to work with a great team.'
Jake Rix
(Founding Editor & Editor-in-Chief for Issue 02.)

Jake is a graduate of Queen Mary University, having studied English Literature. While many topics fascinate him, his core study in academia focusses on Shakespeare and Virginia Woolf. He has applied to KCL for a master’s degree in Shakespeare Studies, a course working in hand with the wonderful Globe theatre. Throughout his time as an undergraduate student, Jake worked with editorial or publishing related projects, most prominently with Wonderer, of which he is a founding editor. His development in interest regarding editing and Shakespeare, thanks to fantastic and influential professors – such as Prof. Jerry Brotton and Prof. Warren Boutcher – he met throughout his time at university, led him to study closely the editing processes involved in all the variant texts of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. He is also interested in as many kinds of art he can get his hands on, so is very much looking forward to working with such a wide and varied range of academic talent in the future!

Prof. Zara Dinnen
(
Founding Editor)

'I am a Lecturer in Twentieth and Twenty-First Century Literature in the School of English and Drama at Queen Mary, and a member of the editorial board of Wonderer Journal. I look forward to reading future issues and being involved in the life of the journal.'

Vincenzo Torromacco
(
Founding Editor)

'I am a PhD candidate and Teaching Associate at Queen Mary. My research explores the contemporary autobiographical novel in relation to questions about the ontology of the book, the dynamic between the temporality of narrative and the temporality of life, and the ways in which aesthetic pleasure alters our conception of these things. My work is premised upon the belief that contemporary philosophical approaches to temporality and subjectivity can inform and reinvigorate theoretical debates about authorship, organic unity, and the so-called fragmentary text.'

Denise Wong
(
Founding Editor)

'I am a PhD candidate and Teaching Associate in the School of English and Drama at Queen Mary. My doctoral research explores the intersection between temporality and the phenomenological structures of negative affect formalised in contemporary second-person narratives. I look forward to collaborating with students and colleagues to showcase the eclectic academic interests of our contributors.'

Dr Jenni Råback
(Founding Editor)

'I have a PhD from Queen Mary for a project on Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell, and I have been teaching in the English department since 2016. I have worked in the literary field in various capacities, including as a writer, editor, teacher, translator, and critic. My writing has appeared in a number of academic publications, most recently in the translation journal Asymptote. A few of my fictional, poetic, and autobiographical creations have also been published—my first-ever publication was in the University of Vienna’s English departmental newspaper. As a member of the editorial team of the Wonderer Journal, I look forward to reading literary voices from aspiring academics and writers.'

Prof. James Vigus
(Founding Editor)

Picture
'I am Senior Lecturer in English at QMUL, specialising in the literature and philosophy of the period of European Romanticism. My main research project is on Henry Crabb Robinson (1775-1867), a relatively little-known wonderer/wanderer who was the leading British interpreter of German aesthetic theory in Britain at the beginning of the 19th century and a tireless traveller. I am inspired by the philosophy and poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and also work on other writers in his circle. As a chessplayer, I’m fascinated by literary representations of this game, such as Zweig’s Schachnovelle. A long time ago I studied as an ERASMUS student in Berlin, which, in a sense, is what made my career.'

Sadie Quinn
(Founding Editor)

Picture
'I am a third-year undergraduate student reading English literature at Queen Mary. I am particularly interested in the application of psychoanalysis to narratives of folklore and world mythologies, with an additional love of Old-Middle English texts and Modernist art and literature. My all-time favourites include Virginia Woolf and Mina Loy. I'm looking forward to working with our wonderful team of editors and writers this year!'

Julie Tanner
(Founding Associate Editor)

Picture
'I am a PhD candidate and Teaching Associate at Queen Mary. My thesis is about the reflexive moods of contemporary literature. As an Associate Editor of Wonderer, I am interested to read submissions that respond to the affective categories central to the journal's rationale, such as curiosity. How might experiences of fascination, uncertainty, or wonder shape our understanding of the texts we study?'

Danielle De Leon
(Founding Editor & Digital Media Team Member)

Picture
'I am a third-year English student here at Queen Mary University of London. Academically speaking, I have always had a strong love for the arts - specifically literature, theatre and music - as well as the ways in which the arts shape our lives and, more generally speaking, how they shape humanity's development as a whole. As one of the journal's peer-reviewers, I look forward to fulfilling my role in this venture of academic growth and discovery alongside the talented team behind the Wonderer Journal!'

Milo Wilson
(Founding Editor)

'I am a third-year undergraduate at Queen Mary University of London studying English with Creative Writing. Academically, I aim to investigate intertextuality in post-modern novels, and how contemporary literature, art and music are informed by our notion of the artistic canon which, for the first time in history, can be accessed and understood as a complete timeline spanning from ancient civilisations to yesterday.'

Natasha Shewring
(Founding Editor)

Picture
'I am currently in my third year studying English at Queen Mary. My main literary interests surround the theory of narratology, particularly how the subtleties in narrative structure and technique can implicate readers and heighten their experience significantly. I also love looking at literature psychoanalytically regarding the behaviour of novelistic constructs and just the impact of the novel itself upon the human mind. I am so excited to share my love for literature with like-minded people.'

Nicolae-Titus Ungureanu
(Head Designer)

Picture
'Hey guys, I'm Nicu and I am really happy to announce that the position of head designer, for the Wonderer Journal was assigned to me. Now I will tell you a little bit about myself. I am currently studying my Master's degree in book and graphic design in Romania. Most of the time I design but on the occasional rainy days I illustrate.
I like to believe I'm a perfectionist but my creative side denies it.'
