Issue 02 theme:
INTERSECTIONS
'Literature in English, not English Literature'
'The main theme for our next edition can be summarised like this:
The study of literature, in all its global artistic presence and just so happening to appear in the language of English, replacing the academic term “English Literature”. The focus of the phrase is set firmly on “literature”, rather than “English”, which is simply the language we must use for our study.
I’ve wilfully ignored the term “world literature” here, so as not to throw all the great diversities of existing literature under an othering umbrella term made in contrast to the academically assumed “traditional” English Literature.
We’re hoping for essays to be in the study of literature from as diverse a number of different places and cultures, geographically and temporally, as possible. We urge you all to explore topics across all time eras and modes of research; the more diverse our submissions, the happier our journal.
The Wonderer team wish you best of luck with your submissions, and eagerly anticipate receiving the varied perspectives, exciting arguments and new-forging thought processes so clearly present in the voices emerging from this current mercurial academic environment of ours – show us all the new intersections you can build across literary criticism!'

Manuscript formatting
- Academic papers should be between 3,000 and 8,000 words in length and comply with the guidelines detailed in the MHRA Style Guide. Please note that the word count does not include abstract, footnotes/endnotes, bibliography or any appendices other than the quotations embedded in the body of the essay. All papers should contain a bibliography, alongside footnotes, acknowledging any primary or secondary sources (if used), and be formatted for blind review (the text should be free of personal and institutional information). Authors are encouraged to consult the following academic writing guide upon submitting papers, especially if adapted from a university assignment.
- Articles proposed for the Journal should be formatted either as a Microsoft Word document (.DOC/.DOCX) or Rich Text Format file (RFT), with 12 pt. font size and double-spaced. When submitting any papers, please provide a two- or three-sentence biography in the submission email (which includes the year of study and the subject pursued at the institution of higher education) to appear in the "Notes on Contributors" section, and your contact information, including an email address.
- Wonderer Journal is committed to a pluralistic approach and, thus, intended for the international community at large. We will accept submissions from undergraduate students enrolled in any course of any institution of higher education. The Journal will continue to consider articles sent in within five months of graduation. The editorial team have set these dates based on the term organisation of the academic year. The dates aim at providing undergraduates with plenty of time to receive any coursework marks and edit them in due time for publication. It is important to note that submissions based on coursework or essays submitted as degree work may only be submitted once the assignment has been marked by the student’s institution.
- The contributions have to be original and not published before. Wonderer Journal does not require exclusivity in submission of essays. Nonetheless, if you have submitted your manuscript to another journal, we kindly request that you inform us about that, and notify us without delay about other journals' decisions on your paper. Authors wishing to use text passages, figures, tables etc. that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s). Evidence that permissions have been granted are to be sent along with the manuscripts submitted for the blind review.
Peer-review process
- Papers considered for publication will undergo a process of double blind review. That is to say, articles will be anonymised and sent to two reviewers (a postgraduate or postdoctoral member paired up with an undergraduate member of the editorial team), who will then accept, decline or offer suggestions for revision that, if performed, may result in an acceptance.
- The editors reserve the right to decline papers that are evidently unsuitable for any reason and at their discretion. The editors will make all the possible efforts to provide feedback. Accepted papers will usually receive extensive feedback from our team of editors.
- Any submissions made by undergraduate members involved in the production of the Journal will be anonymised, sent for review and assessed by the same criteria as all other submissions.
