POSITION OPEN TO: undergraduates & postgraduates (Master's / PhD students / university professors)


What we're looking for:


The role of Peer-Reviewer at Wonderer requires someone who will handle essay submissions dedicatedly and diligently, ensuring that the greatest care and attention to detail is seen to. As a member of the peer-review team you will, alongside a peer-review partner, read through a selection of the submissions received by the journal and come to a decision regarding their acceptance or rejection. You will be required to communicate regularly with your peer-review partner and work as a team in order to ensure that all submissions meet Wonderer’s submission guidelines; all papers must also be checked in accordance with the MHRA Style Guide. In fulfilling the peer-review process, you and your peer-review partner will also be tasked with providing the authors of each submission with a final Feedback Rationale which will outline your collective thoughts on their submission as well as include constructive criticism and, ultimately, your decision on whether to accept or reject their paper.

SKILLS:

  • ORGANISATION: One of the key requirements for any peer-reviewer is keeping up to date on all set marking deadlines and ensuring that all progress is reported back to the management team in good time.​​
  • ​THOROUGHNESS: It is imperative that the peer-review process is carried out fairly, accurately, and in accordance with the Wonderer specifications - which can be found at wondererjournal.co.uk - with regard to content, style, and format. 
  • TEAMWORK: You must be able to communicate effectively with your peer-review partner through consistent email contact as well as establish a method of sharing comments whilst editing which feels appropriate to the two of you.
  • COMMUNICATION: In providing your feedback to our submission authors, it is important to do so respectfully and carefully so as to respect their efforts as well as make clear our gratitude for their submission, regardless of whether you decide to accept or reject their submission. It is also important to communicate any grievances or questions to the Welfare Representative.

Editor-in-Chief

What we're looking for:

Wonderer’s Editor-in-Chief role calls for a person who will passionately, respectfully and authoritatively steer the course of the journal through outstanding communications and direction with the peer-review editors. From a general editorial perspective, the EIC will make final calls about decisions regarding papers, will be fully prepared to revise and refer to the MHRA Style Guide, as used by the journal, and will be extremely thorough, consistent and vigilant in the formatting and reference process. In terms of creativity, the EIC will be trusted to contribute and consider new, original ideas for the themes and style of the journal’s issue. These themes will comply with the Wonderer aesthetic and be discussed with the design team. Communications-wise, the EIC will need to ensure that their instructions are relayed clearly and respectfully to the peer-review editors. The EIC will need to be prepared to give editorial advice and review all work in a constructive, encouraging manner, particularly when communicating with editors and writers.


SKILLS:

  • THOROUGH - This is the most important skill for the EIC. It is the responsibility of the EIC to consistently ensure that every technical, format-related and referential aspects are in order when reviewing and publishing the papers, according to the Wonderer and MHRA guidelines. 
  • ORGANISED - It is vital for the EIC to organise their time well and their communications with other members of the team in order to allow the process to run smoothly and effectively.
  • MOTIVATED - The EIC is a demanding role which requires motivation and a driven attitude. The journal’s content will be outstanding if the motivation behind the EIC’s work is reflected in the final product. 
  • INNOVATIVE - The EIC will be required to pick out and draw attention to new interesting content and subject matters which will allow the issues to have fresh, original concerns. This also applies to the direction for the designs. It is not essential for the EIC to be up-to-date with current literary trends, but they should be prepared to research and be open to new ideas.
  • DIPLOMATIC - The EIC will need to be respectful and unbiased at all times. The person in this role communicates with every branch of the journal and so will need to be understanding, supportive and encouraging. It is the duty of the EIC to communicate their instructions clearly and appropriately.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • To be an undergraduate student
  • An academic essay on a humanities topic (max. 3000 words & please give your essay a title) 
  • A brief cover letter (max. 300 words) motivating why you are best fit to become Wonderer’s next Editor-in-Chief

Designer

Have a good understanding of Illustrator and Photoshop (experience in After Effects is a plus)
